In 1996, WWE saw the debut of “The Man They Call Vader.” Vader had built up an impressive resume for himself prior to his signing to WWE. He had held both the IWGP and WCW World Championships, as well as other titles in his career. He was also very talented in-ring, displaying great agility in addition to his powerful strength. He is easily one of the best super heavyweights to ever compete in the squared circle. It seemed like his arrival would have meant a guaranteed WWE Championship run while he was with the company. However, due to a number of different factors, this never happened.
Vader's SummerSlam Match With Shawn Michaels Was The Beginning Of The End
Vader was presented as a heel upon his debut in the 1996 Royal Rumble match. He went on to have disputes with WWE President Gorilla Monsoon and a rivalry with Yokozuna. He then entered into a program with WWE Champion Shawn Michaels, which culminated with a match between the two at SummerSlam 1996. The two competed for the WWE Championship, however, the match saw an error where Vader did not move during an elbow drop from Michaels. Michaels was visibly frustrated, berating and kicking him. Jim Cornette said about this that “Shawn Michaels, he was just unprofessional.” Michaels won the match and retained his championship. However, Michaels and Vader would not compete again for the WWE Championship.
Vader would have some big matches after this, such as a feud with the Undertaker and taking part in the WWE Championship match at In Your House 13: Final Four with Undertaker, Bret Hart, and Steve Austin. However, Vader was never truly presented as the powerful contender he could have been, like in WCW or NJPW. He never won the WWE Championship, or any title, while in the company.

Backstage Politics Brought Vader's Championship Ambitions To A Halt
There have been a number of different stories regarding the reason why Vader never captured the WWE Championship. One of these factors was the backstage politics of WWE in the late 1990s. During their feud in 1996, Michaels had used his backstage influence in determining how the feud was going to play out. As Bruce Prichard had discussed on his podcast “Something To Wrestle With”, the two men were scheduled to face-off in two more matches for the WWE Championship at both Survivor Series 1996 and Royal Rumble 1997. Vader was supposed to win the WWE Championship at that Survivor Series and then drop the title back to Michaels. Due to Michaels’ position in the WWE and the issues during their SummerSlam match, this trio of matches never happened, and Sycho Sid was given the championship program instead.
Vader's Health Issues And Wrestling Style Affected WWE's View Of Him
In addition to backstage politics, there were also aspects of Vader’s abilities, both in and out of the ring, that were taken into consideration. Another story provided as to why he never became WWE Champion, as Vince Russo discussed in an interview with Sportskeeda, top officials already believed that Vader was on the decline by the time he had signed with WWE. Russo stated that, “I think, bro, as soon as he came in, the perception was that he had already peaked. He was on the other side and coming down.” Jim Ross has also said similar statements regarding Vader’s in-ring shape, stating that, “He was too old. He had too many injuries, and we knew that he could not withstand the schedule that it would require of the champion in that era to fulfill.” Ross also expressed that Vader’s poor hygiene was an issue too. Vader’s stiff style of wrestling was also an issue for many as well.

Vader Still Had A Fantastic Wrestling Career
The reasoning for Vader not becoming WWE Champion was a combination of a number of factors. Backstage politics were certainly influential and prevented him from winning the title after SummerSlam. However, Vader’s decline in-ring, health issues, and his stiff style were also factors taken into consideration. WWE had never geared Vader to be the monster heel he had been elsewhere.
Despite never being at the top of the company as WWE Champion, Vader is still one of the very best to ever step into the ring. He held a number of titles around the world and his career took him to a variety of different promotions. He has also had classic matches with competitors like Cactus Jack, Sting, and Ron Simmons. Vader was also posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2022. Vader’s career in wrestling is certainly one that is very impressive with what he accomplished as an in-ring competitor.
