Shane McMahon started working out in the family business when he was only 18 years. Initially, he was a WWE referee by the name of Shane Stevens. After his short stint as a referee, Shane moved backstage and did work in a number of different roles over the next several years, helping out in production, as well as the creative direction of the company. Finally, in 1998, Shane McMahon made his on-screen debut as a character, and unlike his Shane Stevens days, he was acknowledged as Vince McMahon’s son.

Shane McMahon Was A Major Part Of WWE's Attitude Era
Shane McMahon played a small part as a random executive during the Mike Tyson WrestleMania saga, but then he went on to feud with the top superstars of the Attitude Era. Despite not being a full-time wrestler, he was prominently featured as an important character on the weekly programming. For the most part, Shane McMahon was entertaining. Whether he was playing a heel or a babyface, the guy knew how to work a character and people cared about him.
For much of the Attitude Era, Shane McMahon was a fixture on WWE programming. He would take short breaks from time to time, but from 1998 to 2006 he would show up consistently, often alongside his father, Vince McMahon. As time went on though, Shane started showing up less and less. Shane-O-Mac showed up during the big angles, such as the awful storyline of Vince McMahon and his illegitimate son and the night after Vince McMahon had a horrible accident on stage. The last we then saw of Shane McMahon on WWE television was his feud against Randy Orton in 2009.
Shane McMahon Disappeared From WWE TV In 2009
After being crushed by Orton on an episode of RAW after WrestleMania 25, Shane was kept off television for a long time. A year went by, and then in 2010, it was announced that Shane McMahon had resigned from WWE. Back then, fans couldn’t believe it. Shane McMahon was the heir apparent to the company, and then out of nowhere, he was gone. Shane would return to WWE seven years later, but why did he walk away in the first place?
After his return to WWE in 2016, Shane McMahon was interviewed by Mick Foley and the subject of his 2010 departure came up. Shane noted that the decision was building up for a while and the reason why left the company was because working there was no longer fun. Apparently, Shane had his own ideas, but Vince McMahon was not listening to him. It stopped being fun, so Shane walked away.

There Were Rumors That Shane McMahon And Triple H Didn't Get Along
Interestingly, Mick did ask Shane McMahon about his relationship with Triple H. Back in the late 2000s, numerous reports indicated that there was a power struggle between Shane McMahon and Triple H, so when the news broke in 2010, many assumed it was partly due to Triple H. When he was asked by Mick Foley, Shane sort of dodged the question, stating that his relationship with Hunter had not changed at all. Foley, unsatisfied by the response, commented that his answer was evasive, but Shane simply shrugged and said it was the truth.
Years later, when Shane was a guest on the Corey Graves podcast, the question came up again and Shane gave a somewhat different answer. He did not mention anything about it not being fun or tension with Vince at all. Instead, Shane said that he wanted to try something new. He had learned a lot from the 15 years he spent working in the WWE, and he felt it was time to go try something else.
Shane McMahon Wanted To Spend More Time With His Family And Do Something Different
Shane also mentioned that he wanted to spend more time with his family, and that was one of his biggest driving factors that led him to taking a hiatus from WWE. There is no doubting that because even when Shane was not a part of an on-screen storyline, he was constantly working backstage and on the road.
Two different explanations in two different interviews. There was undoubtedly some tension in the McMahon family that led to Shane McMahon leaving the WWE in 2010, but Shane also did want to get away from WWE and do something else for a change. He oversaw a number of different ventures during his time outside WWE and he was decently successful at a lot of them.
