After uprooting her life for a career as an actress in Los Angeles, it was eyebrow-raising when Penny quit the profession on The Big Bang Theory.

One of the biggest question marks on The Big Bang Theory was why Penny quit acting if she loved it so much. Throughout the series, Penny went on to audition for multiple roles without hesitation because her ultimate dream was to be a famous actress. After moving to Los Angeles from Nebraska, Penny didn't want to seem like a failure to her family and friends when none of her auditions panned out. With the help of her neighbor, Sheldon Cooper, and her love interest, Leonard Hofstadter, Penny tried our for many different roles while making money as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory.

Before The Big Bang Theory ended with season 12, Penny was in a hemorrhoid commercial, a deleted scene of NCIS, and a low-budget movie where she turned into a killing gorilla called Serial Ape-ist. While they were all paying gigs, this was not the resume she planned on having when she moved to California to be a star. The older she got and the fewer roles she got auditions for, Penny became self-reflective and quit acting for good.

In The Big Bang Theory season 7, episode 12, "The Occupation Recalibration," Penny quit her job as a waitress to put all her efforts into acting, but that didn't last long. She was fired from her only acting gig, which was when she decided that she needed to make smarter decisions. At the start of TBBT season 8, Penny sported shorter hair and a more professional look. She quit acting after having little success and for just not being any good. Jobless and low on cash, her friend Bernadette got her an interview for a full-time job, and after accepting that position she never went back to acting.

Penny Eventually Became A Pharmaceutical Sales Rep.

Penny knew she was out of her league when Bernadette got her the job interview at ZenGen, a pharmaceutical company. She knew nothing about pharmaceuticals but did have something close to sales experience after being a waitress for so many years. Despite being a people person and beautiful, Penny tanked her interview and made a bad impression. But in a shocking change in direction, when Penny mentioned to her interviewer that she was afraid of Bernadette, he delightfully agreed and saw Penny in a new light — hiring her on the spot.

A part of what made The Big Bang Theory so popular was how relatable the characters were. Penny's indecision about her future and whether she was good enough for a new position was empathetic. Knowing acting was no longer her future, Penny put the effort in at ZenGen and eventually became one of their top salespeople. At the end of The Big Bang Theory, Penny began working directly under Bernadette in a higher position, proving that while it was hard, quitting acting for something she was better at was the best decision for her career.
