Avengers: Endgame was the debut of Pepper Potts' Rescue armor, which was built by Tony Stark – but why did he make it, considering his fears?
Avengers: Endgame brought various surprises for Marvel fans, including Tony Stark building an armor for his wife, Pepper Potts, named "Rescue", but why did he do so considering his fears? The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the most extensive universe of superheroes on film and TV, and it all began in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, which introduced Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Iron Man also paved the way for the formation of the Avengers team, and established Iron Man as the lead of the Infinity Saga.
Following his debut movie, Tony Stark returned in two more Iron Man movies, Captain America: Civil War, had a minor role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and starred in four Avengers movies, with Avengers: Endgame marking the end of his arc. Tony Stark went through a whole journey in the MCU, going from narcissistic billionaire to actual hero who sacrificed himself to save the universe. Thanks to the Nano Gauntlet, Iron Man was able to deliver the final snap that defeated Thanos and his armies, but he passed away moments after.
Avengers: Endgame also showed what Tony had been doing during the five-year gap between Thanos’ snap and revealed he had formed a family with Pepper Potts and they had a daughter, Morgan (Lexi Rabe). It was also shown that Tony had been working on a new armor, though not for him – this one was made for Pepper and was called “Rescue”, and it was very similar to his iconic armors. Now, Tony’s greatest fears were failure, big catastrophes (like the Chitauri invasion), his technology falling into the wrong hands, and his loved ones being at risk, and building the Rescue armor for Pepper brought together many of those fears – so why did he build it?
Pepper got to use the Rescue armor during the Battle of Earth, fighting alongside Iron Man and the rest of the heroes of the MCU, and so far, that has been the only time Rescue has been seen in action. Those five years following the snap gave Tony Stark a different perspective, and for years he had been lowkey obsessed with the idea of his replacement, as he knew he wouldn’t be around forever (whether he retired or something tragic happened). However, Rescue wasn’t built to be a hero, but to be Morgan’s protector in case something happened to Tony and he wouldn’t be around to keep her safe. In the end, Rescue met that goal by fighting in the Battle of Earth, and it’s unknown if she will return in the near future.
Building the Rescue armor didn’t go against Tony’s fears and ideas, and was instead the result of all of them, as he just wanted to keep his family safe when he wasn’t around because he knew the risks that came with being Iron Man and that the universe houses many threats. Unfortunately, MCU fans didn’t get to see everything that the Rescue armor can do, and as Pepper Potts isn’t part of this universe's current plans, it’s unlikely they will learn more about this specific armor.
