Slowly but surely, he was becoming a star.

After A Solid Start In WWE, Bobby Lashley Was Released In 2008

Bobby Lashley was a natural babyface, with an insane amount of strength and a good amount of charisma. After the ECW World Championship reign, Lashley set his sights on the WWE championship, spending the first half of 2007 chasing the illustrious title. Then, he was gone.

Lashley was taken off television after being “injured” by Mr. Kennedy so he could take time off and heal a legitimate injury he suffered during a match with John Cena. He was one of the more notable babyfaces back then and fans expected him to return in glorious fashion. Unfortunately, Lashley was kept off television for several months, then surprisingly in February 2008, it was announced that he was released from WWE. What happened? A bad fall out.

Lashley v Umaga

Lashley was asked this question quite recently, and he said he wanted to work with different people and that he wanted to pay his dues by working the independent scene. You would think that WWE and Lashley parted ways on the best of terms in 2008, but that is not what happened, unfortunately. Back then, his sudden release was a big deal and dirt sheets were working around the clock to figure out why a superstar in the making was let go by the company.

Months before the official announcement by WWE, Lashley posted a message on his official website, apologizing to his fans and stating that he would not be coming back. In the same post, Lashley mentioned that the circumstances were such that he had no other option but to leave the company, and furthermore, he said that evil had prevailed and that someone people were out to destroy others.

The company was trying to keep him around as they had invested quite a bit in him but as mentioned on his website, Lashley himself asked for WWE to release him from his contract, and eventually, the company granted him his wish. He was not subjected to a no-compete clause like the majority of departing wrestlers.

Lashley went on to wrestle in TNA and then embarked on a decently successful MMA career,. He came back to WWE in 2018, and he has remained with the company ever since. During an interview, Lashley credited Triple H for bringing him back to the company, and since his return, he has taken part in a number of high-profile storylines and even became world champion more than once.

As big as Lashley is today, he would have been a massive star if he remained with the company in 2008. Vince McMahon clearly had a lot planned for him but Lashley stood up for himself and left the company due to backstage toxicity and went on make himself an even bigger commodity.
