One of the biggest “what if” scenarios in WWE history feature the possibility of Mark Jindrak joining Evolution. WWE used their Ruthless Aggression documentary series to confirm a longstanding rumor that Jindrak was initially considered for Batista’s role before the decision was made to go with The Animal. Triple H, Ric Flair and Randy Orton were the locks for the faction, but a fourth was needed to make it complete.

Jindrak’s immature ways upset Triple H enough to nix any plans despite WWE already filming videos with him in the group. Batista getting the spot helped him rise to the top of WWE and Jindrak was out of the company just a few years later. Fans often wonder how things would have worked if Jindrak was the one to get a career-changing break over Batista.

Best Case Scenario For WWE

Mark Jindrak was one of WWE's top prospects at the start of the Ruthless Aggression Era. WCW gave Jindrak high-profile experience in main event matches against legends. Jinkdrak was an important member of the Natural Born Thrillers faction who feuded with the likes of Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page and Lex Luger during WCW’s final months.

WWE didn’t do much with Jindrak during the Invasion storyline and considered Evolution as his big break in place of Batista. The best scenario for Jindrak would have been becoming a strong worker for the group. Barry Windham was the perfect fourth member of the Four Horsemen since he was talented enough to work with anyone and contribute at a high level.

Jindrak had the in-ring advantage over Batista at the time of the decision. Future success in Mexico showed his charisma to the point where he was offered acting roles on soap operas. Jindrak learning from Triple H and Ric Flair could have seen him having a similar path as Randy Orton to a top spot faster than Batista got there. The experience from WCW would have given him the perk of knowing how to wrestle at a high level with a consistent main event position.

Worst Case Scenario For WWE

The WWE career of Mark Jindrak flopped after his Evolution plans were canceled. Triple H believing Jindrak was too immature and not ready for a top role could have been right, even if the booking didn’t help him. Jindrak flopped in a tag team with Garrison Cade that went nowhere. The bigger opportunity came when uniting with Luther Reigns as Smackdown General Manager Kurt Angle’s sidekicks in a new faction.

Neither push led to much success due to Jindrak not connecting with the crowd and the same could have happened in Evolution. Batista played an enforcer role in the group that made him unlike any of the other members. Jindrak was very similar to Randy Orton and that could have made it a tough task for the fans to separate them.

Batista did things like teaming with Ric Flair and eventually challenging Triple H. Jindrak doing either of those things effectively, even at his best, seems impossible to visualize on paper. There is a good chance he’d have hurt Orton by being too alike and let down the other members when having to work with them in the way Batista did.

Most Realistic Scenario For WWE

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle of two extremes when breaking things down. There is no way to argue that Batista wasn’t the right choice to join Evolution since he became a legendary figure for the company. Jindrak likely would not have main evented WrestleMania multiple times, but he could have had a Hall of Fame-worthy career.

WWE would have put Jindrak in a position to succeed since Triple H’s presence made Evolution one of the most protected acts in the company at the time. Jindrak would have ended up being the fourth most important member of the group by far, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have made it work. There would have been opportunities to dominate mid-card titles or hold the world championships on a few occasions.

Jindrak’s realistic ceiling would have been at the level of someone like The Miz or Dolph Ziggler. No one would argue those names as being bigger legends than Batista, but they clearly made their mark on the industry. Jindrak missed out on the chance to leave a strong legacy in WWE and a stronger legacy in wrestling as part of Evolution.
