The boxing heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, and the 'lineal' UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, set the stage for the commencement of the 2023 Riyadh Season with their much-anticipated fight. This showdown took place in the newly constructed Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia.
In a bold move, Fury secured a deal to face Oleksandr Usyk in a highly anticipated showdown for the undisputed heavyweight championship titles in December before stepping in the ring with The Predator.
In the fight, Fury traded with the shockingly impressive Ngannou in the first round. The former UFC champ remained competitive, trading punches with Fury and landing some powerful hooks of his own. In the third round, Ngannou showcased his abilities by delivering a stunning knockdown.
The fight maintained its competitive nature as both fighters continued to exchange blows, with Ngannou targeting Fury's body. In the sixth round, Fury's frustration became evident when he landed an elbow on his opponent. Impressively; as the fight progressed, Ngannou even switched stances to try to land his left hand effectively.
The match went the full distance, with Ngannou making a remarkable pro boxing debut. The result was a close split decision, with scorecards of 95-94 for Ngannou, 96-93 for Fury, and 95-94 for Fury, narrowly favoring the boxing champ.
Fury may have the W attached to his record, as he improves to 34-0-1 (24 KOs), but the true winner of the night was indeed Francis Ngannou, whom by all accounts was completely written off by both fans and the boxing media. To be such an underdog and yet go the distance, even winning one of the judge's cards, speaks volumes of the former MMA champion. His official record in boxing is now 0-1, but he definitely won over fans.
