Scott M. Gimple provides an optimistic update for Tales of the Walking Dead season 2, saying he wants to return to the anthology series in the future.
The Walking Dead creator Scott M. Gimple offers an optimistic update for Tales of the Walking Deadseason 2. The first anthology series in the zommbie franchise, Tales of the Walking Dead premiered in August 2022 on AMC. The series consists of six independent episodes, each focusing on different characters, locations, and timelines in the world of The Walking Dead. While the show introduced new characters to the universe, episode 3 focused on existing fan-favorite Walking Dead villain Alpha, showing her backstory and how she became the leader of the Whisperers. Tales of the Walking Dead received mixed-to-positive reviews, and to date, has not been renewed for any further seasons.
In an interview with Collider, Gimple provids an optimistic update for Tales of the Walking Dead season 2. Gimple says that, while Tales of the Walking Dead didn't end on a cliffhanger that would demand another season, he would like to return to the anthology series in the future. Read Gimple's full comments below:
"Oh, yeah. I hope we do. We’re focusing on these classic characters, this year. The thing with Tales, it didn’t end on this cliffhanger where you’ve gotta get back to that. It’s an anthology show. So, I’m hoping that we can get back to it, but it’s probably gonna be catch all as catch can, as far as within all the other shows. This year, though, is about focusing on these classic character shows, but also, we’re still wrapping up Fear the Walking Dead. And then, there are other projects that have been on the burner, as well. We’re getting the next phase ready."
What's Next for The Walking Dead Franchise
While Gimple is eager to return to Tales of the Walking Dead and explore new stories from the Walking Dead universe, the upcoming slate of spinoff series has Gimple's plate very full. The Walking Dead's series finale premiered last November, but earlier in 2022, it was revealed that the show's finale wouldn't mean the end for fan-favorite characters. Throughout the year, it was announced that there would be three upcoming spinoff series, each focusing on classic Walking Dead characters, and that these spinoffs would continue to tell the characters' stories.
The first of these upcoming spinoffs is The Walking Dead: Dead City, which features Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they traverse New York City together. Though there is no set release date yet, Dead City will be the first of the new Walking Dead spinoffs to premiere, with the announced release for the series being June 2023. After that, Norman Reedus will reprise his role as Daryl in the series Daryl Dixon, which will see the archer exploring a post-apocalyptic France. No date is confirmed yet, but the series is expected to hit AMC in late 2023. Finally, the long-awaited return of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) will come in 2024 with the spinoff Rick & Michonne, which will explore where the beloved characters have been since their respective departures from The Walking Dead.
Alongside the slate of new spinoffs, the first-ever Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead will head into its final season on May 14. Season 8 will be divided into two parts, with six episodes in each. With the Walking Dead franchise having a busy year and a half, it may still be some time before other projects go into development. However, Gimple's comments on a potential Tales of the Walking Deadseason 2 are reassuring, and more of the anthology series could come in the future.
