Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi shares an update on a possible Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire, remaining open to the possibility.

Director Sam Raimi shares an update on a possible Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire. The two collaborated on the original Spider-Man trilogy in the 2000s, changing the pop culture landscape by helping usher in the current golden age of superhero movies. The films were very successful at the box office, grossing over $2 billion collectively. A fourth installment was in development, even securing a May 2011 release date. Unfortunately, those plans fell apart and Sony decided to reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield headlining The Amazing Spider-Man.

Of course, Maguire reprised his iteration of Peter Parker in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home, appearing alongside Garfield and Tom Holland thanks to the movie's multiverse storyline. No Way Home was a monumental hit, earning rave reviews and grossing $1.8 billion worldwide. Reactions to the film have sparked discussions about Maguire or Garfield starring in another solo project, though nothing has been confirmed. Now, Raimi weighs in on the possibility of a Spider-Man 4.

In an interview with Fandango to promote his MCU entry, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Raimi was asked about making another Spider-Man movie with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Though he admits it isn't on the table right now, Raimi seemed open to it. Check out his response in the space below:

I've come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don't really have a story or a plan. I don't know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don't know what their thoughts are about that. I haven't really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I'd love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.

Tobey Maguire as Peter 2 In Spider Man No Way Home

While Raimi dealt with heavy amounts of studio interference on Spider-Man 3, he clearly remains passionate about the character and his cast. One of the reasons why Raimi was keen on making a Spider-Man 4 is because he was disappointed with how the third film turned out and he wanted to end things on a high note. Even after all this time, Raimi continues to think about his unmade Spider-Man 4, so it would be interesting to see him return to this universe and try to deliver on that vision. A Spider-Man 4 with Maguire doesn't appear to be in the cards, but it's encouraging Raimi isn't shutting the door. No Way Home proved anything is possible, so if the opportunity presented itself, Raimi would be game.

In some respects, No Way Home served as a fitting coda for Maguire's "Peter 2," most notably confirming that he and Mary Jane are still together despite the challenges they've faced. Should No Way Home be the last time Maguire dons the suit, his role fulfills Raimi's desire for him to swing off on a high note. An argument can be made Maguire coming back for another solo movie runs the risk of ruining what made his No Way Home return so special, but there's no denying it would be tempting to explore his character further. The No Way Home writers toyed with the ideas of adding in Maguire and Garfield Spider-Man epilogues, so someone could come up with a concept for Spider-Man 4 one day.
