1196 Metropolitan Avenue got its start as a firehouse for Engine Company No. 286, also known as the Brooklyn Gashouse Gang, and later transformed into underground music venue Metropolitan Social Club as well as artists' lofts. Today, it has been converted to six loft condominiums and named The Williamsburg Firehouse Lofts.

Original features like exposed brick walls, 16-foot barrel vaulted ceilings, extra-tall windows, and skylights have been preserved in all units. However, they come with modern features like new appliances, modern fixtures and finishes, private outdoor space, and mini split systems for central heating and cooling.
