The Case For Why Roman Reigns, Daniel Bryan & Edge Should Win

The main event for day two of WrestleMania 37 will see Roman Reigns defend the Universal Championship against Daniel Bryan and Royal Rumble winner Edge.

The initial plan was for Reigns to face the WWE Hall of Famer one-on-one, but Adam Pearce added Bryan to the match following his controversial loss to the Universal Champion at Fastlane.

In many cases, a marquee WrestleMania match outcome is way too obvious. Just about everybody knew that Braun Strowman would defeat Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36 last year. And Drew McIntyre's victory over Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship was fairly predictable.

But the Universal Championship match between Reigns, Edge and Bryan is truly anybody's to win. All three men feel like deserving and strong candidates to win this match.

With that said, let's make a case as to why each of the three superstars should leave WrestleMania 37 as the Universal Champion.

The Case For Roman Reigns

reigns-heyman-1

Reigns' run as the arrogant heel has been nothing short of brilliant. He and Paul Heyman have formed a highly successful partnership, and there's no reason for WWE to end it any time soon.

WWE frequently struggles to create top-notch heels, because many of them just end up getting the babyface treatment. Reigns is totally believable as a bad guy, and he'll consistently garner the negative crowd reactions that every wrestling villain wants.

The odds are against Reigns from retaining. But if he outlasts both Bryan and Edge to retain his title in the main event of WrestleMania 37? That will only add more heat to his villainous character. And that's what you want.

Yes, he's held the title for five months (and counting). But there's nothing bad about Reigns holding the championship for a while longer. If he's flourishing as the title holder, and as the top heel on SmackDown, why change it?

From a long-term booking standpoint, the safe bet is to keep the title on Reigns. Let him continue to build up his own bad guy persona by continuing the lengthy championship reign.

The Case For Daniel Bryan

Bryan hasn't been used that much in the main event scene over the past year or so, but it was a savvy call to add him to the triple threat match.

The future Hall of Famer recently hinted that his run as a full-time superstar could end soon. And given his immense popularity and contributions to the company, it would be nice to see WWE reward Bryan with (at least ) one last major title reign.

Even if the plan is to take the title off of Reigns, one can only assume that WWE will want to protect him. So it would make the most sense for Bryan to win the title via submission or pinfall on Edge.

Bryan deserves another major WrestleMania moment as a full-time superstar, similar to his career-defining at WrestleMania XXX.

Now, Bryan probably isn't a long-term champion. If he wins the title, he will likely drop it to Edge or Reigns at a later date. And that's okay.

Edge appears to be a heel character now as well. And the best way to close out a show is to have the babyface win the championship. WWE could then have Bryan continue his program with one or both of Edge and Reigns after WrestleMania. And who wouldn't want to see more of that?

The Case For Edge

The case for Edge is rather simple.

A serious neck injury forced The Rated-R Superstar to retire in his prime at the age of 37 in 2011. Nine years later, Edge made an emotional, inspiring and illustrious return at the Royal Rumble.

Edge won this year's 30-man bout to earn his WrestleMania opportunity. And what a comeback story it would be if he ended it with a Universal Championship victory on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

The Ultimate Opportunist worked tirelessly to get himself back into the ring. And we've all seen him shine as a main event star and major champion. He's a safe option to hold the title for the long-run.

With Edge, you're getting someone who can portray both the lovable babyface and the obnoxious, arrogant heel. He can fulfill either of those roles, and if there's one superstar who's perfectly suited to take the championship off of Reigns now, it's him.

An Edge victory also gives WWE several options here. Do they pit him against the perennial face (Bryan) or do they run a heel vs. heel program between Edge and Reigns? Or do you keep it three-way? You can't go wrong with either.

Add it all up, and perhaps the best and safest pick is to give Edge his first championship reign since his remarkable and moving return.
