Comic deaths are often maligned for killing characters everyone knows will soon return, but one Spider-Man moment bucked the trend even without actually killing Peter Parker. Facing a foe he doesn't believe he'll survive, Peter finds the time to call Aunt May, and his final words are everything heartbroken MCU fans need to see the Wall-Crawler say to the woman who raised him.

Spider-Man: No Way Home featured many explosive and emotional moments, including the death of Aunt May. Her last words to Peter encapsulated the very theme of Spider-Man's existence: with great power must come great responsibility. It was a heart-wrenching moment that no-one expected to see, as Marisa Tomei's May passed away in Peter's arms, to his horror and disbelief. In the comics, however, it was Spider-Man who believed he didn't have long left, and chose to use his remaining time to confirm his true feelings for his aunt.

In 2001's Amazing Spider-Man #34 by J. Michael Straczynski, John Romita Jr., and Scott Hanna, Spider-Man is engaged in a twelve-hour long battle with Morlun, a psychic vampire from a different reality. Peter is battered and bruised, hungry and tired, yet Morlun remains unaffected and unfazed, demonstrating a level of strength Peter compares to the Hulk. After putting some distance between the two of them and resigning himself to the idea that this is his last fight, Peter calls Aunt May and tells her that he loves her, she's his favorite aunt in the world, and to take care of herself before hanging up. It's a touching scene which makes it clear that Peter truly believes his time is up, and this is everything he wants May to know.

Peter ultimately ends up surviving the encounter, only due to the sudden appearance of Ezekiel Sims. But it's understandable why he wanted calling Aunt May to be his last act. Not only is she the one who raised Peter, but she is also the one constant in his life and is always there when he has nowhere else to turn. When Gwen died, Aunt May was there for him. When things soured between Peter and Harry, Aunt May offered advice to Peter. Whenever Mary Jane would leave Peter, Aunt May helped pick up the pieces. No matter how bad things got for Peter, Aunt May was always the one to tell him things would be okay.

In the movie, May's death is a terrible surprise, and Peter has little opportunity to express to his aunt exactly how he sees her. While this comic moment ended up having a happier outcome, it succeeded in offering up Peter's definitive statement on his love for May Parker, and confirmed that even faced with death, Spider-Man's thoughts immediately go to the people he loves and how to do what he can to make their lives better. Usually - including in the MCU - Peter's stories include him losing someone important, but on the occasion when Spider-Man thought his own number was up, his reaction was the perfect expression of love for Aunt May.
