It appears there's an explanation for WWE running an injury angle with Sami Zayn recently on Monday Night Raw. After Zayn battled Drew McIntyre in a banger of a match, The Scottish Warrior attacked Zayn backstage, targeting his leg and cementing his heel turn. It was played off as a major injury for Zayn and reports are surfacing that the fan-favorite will be taking some time off.
As per the Wrestling Obersever Newsletter, Zayn had asked for time off recently & was granted it by WWE.
Zayn has been pushing pretty hard in recent months. He's been part of some big narratives on WWE programming, including a main event run with Roman Reigns, then a tag team championship run with Kevin Owens. Owens recently was moved over to SmackDown and Zayn stayed on Raw, working with the top babyfaces and eventually being part of the Survivor Series WarGames main event. Following that match, he worked a short program with McIntyre and it looks like he could be out for a while.
It's not clear how long Zayn will be away. Whether it's a few weeks to an extended break that would keep him out until the Royal Rumble, he's deserving of some time off. It's said that WWE has been much more willing to grant time off to performers under Triple H's creative direction. Some to see family, others as a breather and way to refresh. It works out for fans because the stars are missed and when they return, it's a much bigger deal.
Sami Zayn Reflects On His Loss To Roman Reigns At WWE Elimination Chamber
Sami Zayn suffered a heartbreaking loss to Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in his hometown of Montreal. Now, he's sharing his thoughts. All the while, it plays out well as far as McIntyre is concerned. He's now known as the guy who took out one of the top babyfaces in the company. It sets up a top-level heel run for him, with a program in the works between these two for when Zayn eventually returns.
Sami Zayn Will Be Missed
No doubt, not having Zayn on WWE programming will be a loss for the company. Fortunately, the roster is deeper now than it's ever been. With Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, CM Punk and others as babyfaces on the red brand, the company will make do just fine while Zayn is away. But, when he's back, it will be to the delight of the WWE Universe.
