Wrestling fans have a lot of love for the memorable impersonation segments that take place in entertaining fashion. This is typically a fun idea with names like Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Big Show, and The Rock doing great impressions of talents they were feuding with. Edge did this occasionally as well, but one stands out for the humor involved.
WWE utilized a real-life arrest of Ric Flair to have it become part of his established rivalry with Edge. The impersonation came during a filmed segment that added more intensity to their feud beyond a secondary rivalry for the Intercontinental Championship. Edge clearly showed his depth as a performer by pulling off a flawless impersonation of a legendary figure.
Edge's Feud With Ric Flair Over The Intercontinental Championship
Edge was finally starting to move into that top role WWE expected of him towards the end of 2005. An underrated rivalry with Shawn Michaels, a huge honor becoming the first Money in the Bank contract winner, and winning his blood feud with Matt Hardy all gave him huge momentum heading into 2006. Ric Flair was in a good spot as well after turning face following the end of Evolution. Triple H and Flair had a great series of matches in between Ric’s Intercontinental Championship reign.

WWE decided to pair Edge and Flair against each other to start the year since Edge’s character was based on disrespecting others. Flair had enough of Edge’s antics, and it led to the two having a noteworthy feud. The Intercontinental Championship was the title on the line when they started having their matches.
New Year’s Revolution 2006 ended up playing a huge role in Edge’s career due to him cashing in Money in the Bank to defeat John Cena for his first world title win, but he actually faced Flair earlier that night. WWE booked the match to open the show, so fans wouldn’t be thinking about Edge or his briefcase, especially since no one knew how the cash in worked just yet. Flair being such a strong rival for Edge made it easier to book this night.
Edge Mocks Ric Flair's Road Rage Arrest In A Great Impersonation
A real-life incident from Ric Flair’s personal life was used during his feud with Edge. Flair was arrested in his hometown area of Charlotte, North Carolina for a road rage incident. The wild story saw Flair getting out of his car and grabbing someone by the neck through their window after having a negative exchange while driving. There was also damage done to the other person’s vehicle via Flair flying off the handle and losing all self-control.
Flair was charged with two misdemeanors of personal property injury and simple assault and battery, but he didn’t have to spend any time in jail. WWE brought Flair back to television rather quickly with many fans not even knowing about the incident. That was until WWE decided to have Edge use it in a heel manner to add to the story.
WWE filmed a vignette of Edge with a blonde wig and pink robe with just underwear underneath driving on the road, then running into issues with another driver. Robbie E aka Robert Stone was the extra selected to play the other driver when Edge as Flair attacked him. Edge did the hilarious “woo” over and over with a few one-liners added while putting the figure four on the other driver.
Ric Flair Is Edge's First Challenger After Cashing In Money In The Bank
The impersonation of Ric Flair by Edge worked both for the long-term and the short-term picture. It was a hilarious segment that the audience enjoyed and remembered without harming either character. However, the matches to follow were improved by Flair having more intensity when returning to get revenge on Edge.
WWE booked the Intercontinental Championship match at New Year’s Revolution 2006 to end in a DQ for Flair to retain the belt and for Edge to not suffer a loss. This also set up the big Money in the Bank cash in of Edge beating John Cena after his Elimination Chamber match to close the show.
Flair actually got a title shot against Edge before Cena. Vince McMahon booked the TLC match on Raw between Edge and Flair for Edge to have a big victory before dropping it back to Cena, and also to sell the attraction of Flair wrestling with ladders. The bloody match was an underrated all-time Raw outing with both men delivering. Edge won to end their feud and gain some more credibility as WWE Champion before moving into the bigger feud with Cena. The impersonation played a massive role in the Flair feud working during a pivotal time in Edge's career.
