The long-awaited reboot of the Percy Jackson franchise will come in the form of a Disney+ series, but what else has been announced so far?

Despite the poor critical reception of the movies, the Percy Jackson TV show is officially going ahead on Disney+. Based on Rick Riordan's novel series of the same name, the Percy Jackson TV show will follow the titular character after he discovers that his father is the Greek god Poseidon. The novel series consists of five books, which serve as the first collection in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, which continues the story of the modern exploits of various Greek gods and demi-gods.

Percy Jackson has already been adapted for the screen. In 2010, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released to mixed critical reception and moderate box office success. Directed by Chris Columbus, the first movie paved the way for a sequel in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, which received similar critical reception to its predecessor and generated slightly less at the box office. One of the biggest issues with the movies was the excessive creative liberties they took with the source material, something which Riordan himself publicly criticized.

The Percy Jackson TV show is set to right those wrongs. With Riordan heavily involved with the upcoming Disney+ series as an executive producer and writer, it's virtually guaranteed to be a more faithful adaptation of the book series. Riordan has been teasing the Percy Jackson TV series since May 2020, but strides are now being made in making the series a reality.

Percy Jackson TV Show Is Coming To Disney+

Percy Jackson season 1 has 8 episodes

Exactly what went wrong with the Percy Jackson movies is much debated, but in addition to the major changes made to the source material, the films also came under fire for rushing the franchise's story. The upcoming series already seems to be taking a better approach, as the episodic format will lend itself to better narrative development. What's more, it's confirmed that the Percy Jackson TV series is coming exclusively to Disney+, which means it will likely receive the full support of the streaming service when it comes to advertising and promoting the show.

Percy Jackson TV Show Casting Updates: What's Been Said

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Series author Rick Riordan has shared that a casting announcement is on its way. In 2021, Riordan also explained that the casting call for the role of Percy was specifically "looking for an actor who can 'play 12'". This indicates that the Percy Jackson TV show will be seeking to avoid the aging-up of the characters which was one Riordan's many criticisms of the movies.

With Disney's Percy Jackson TV series set to follow a younger and more faithful version of its titular character, it would seem that the show will follow the books more directly than the movies. Riordan's involvement is perhaps the best evidence for this, as the author has stated the general plans for the series. According to Riordan, the first season will adapt the first book, The Lightning Thief, with subsequent seasons adapting subsequent books in line with the author's vision.

How Many Episodes Percy Jackson Season 1 Has

Riordan himself has also announced that Percy Jackson season 1 will be comprised of 8 episodes. He also explained that the scripts for episodes 1-4 are "pretty much done", and that they are "hard at work" on the rest. The 8-episode format will allow for a better exploration of Disney+'s Percy Jackson characters and story than the movies, proving again that the franchise's future is in good hands.

Percy Jackson TV Show Release Date Prediction

It's also been announced that filming for the Percy Jackson TV series is set to start in June 2022. An exact release date for Percy Jackson season 1 is yet to be announced, but this mid-2022 filming announcement makes it likely that the series won't reach Disney+ until 2023. Although post-production could potentially only take a matter of months, it's more likely that a fantasy series like Percy Jackson will take a little longer after filming to release to Disney+.
