A new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home features Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who were notably absent from early marketing material.
Marvel releases a new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Spider-Man: No Way Home was released last December and became incredibly successful for Sony by pleasing fans and critics and becoming the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time. The film sees the return of Tom Holland's Peter Parker, who seeks out Doctor Strange to make the world forget he is Spider-Man. Things of course don't go according to plan, resulting in Strange fracturing the multiverse and villains from past Spider-Man movies entering Holland's dimension.
Rumors of Maguire and Garfield returning started soon after Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx were announced to return as Doc Ock and Electro. The marketing for the film focused on the film's villains, making fans excited to see the return of Doc Ock, Electro, the Lizard, Sandman, and the Green Goblin. Trailers and posters made it seem like Holland's Spidey would be taking on the five villains all by himself, but it was still widely believed Maguire and Garfield would make cameos. When Spider-Man: No Way Home's Brazil trailer showed the Lizard getting kicked by an invisible figure, it was assumed Sony and Marvel had edited out two of the three Spider-Men to keep their return a surprise.
With Spider-Man: No Way Home being released four months ago, it's well known that Maguire and Garfield did indeed return for the sequel. However, a new trailer released on Spider-Man's official YouTube page to celebrate National Superhero Day shows what the MCU movie could have been marketed as if all three Spider-Man actors were announced before the film's release. As mentioned above, Maguire and Garfield were expected to return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but there was no way of knowing how big of a role they would have prior to release. Thankfully, they returned for more than just cameos and were integral to Holland's fight against Green Goblin and the other multiverse villains. Past Spider-Man movies have suffered from stuffing too many characters into a single movie, which could have easily happened with Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Sony and Marvel were able to find the right balance to still keep the story focused on Holland's Peter Parker.
Some may have loved to see Maguire and Garfield in early trailers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but seeing them walk through Ned's portals on the big screen made for a special movie-going experience. It had been 14 years since Maguire suited up as Spider-Man and eight years for Garfield, so watching them team up with Holland without official confirmation prior to release made many audiences burst into cheers. The studios had also already built a ton of hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home by bringing back past villains. So while seeing Maguire in Garfield in trailers would have been a welcome shock, it may be better that they saved them for promoting the home release of Spider-Man: No Way Home instead.
