Looking back at the most memorable NYC real estate of "Succession"

The show has attracted attention for its compelling storylines, shifting loyalties among the Roy family (which some have made a parlor game of guessing the real-life families who inspired it), and the jaw-dropping New York City real estate.

Between the buildings and the finishes, the real estate in Succession conveys as much additional information about the characters as their clothes and accessories. It also stands in stark contrast to the actors’ real estate purchases – e.g., while Kieran Culkin lives modestly in the East Village, his character, Roman Roy, has been portrayed as living in a $40 million Upper West Side penthouse and a $22.5 million Chelsea townhouse. We take a look at these listings and other New York City homes linked to Succession characters.

A final-season episode that had many talking kicked off in Kendall Roy’s Upper East Side penthouse, where the soaring ceilings, arched windows, and minimalist finishes acted as a backdrop. It is located at 180 East 88th Street, the tallest building in its Carnegie Hill neighborhood, and the listing price is nearly as steep as the building.

35-Hudson-Yards-0135 Hudson Yards, #PH90 (The Corcoran Group)A few seasons before he moved to the Upper East Side (see above), Kendall Roy made his home in a full-floor Hudson Yards penthouse that, at the time, had the highest private terrace on the market. Off-screen, it was originally listed for $59 million, but entered contract with a $49.5 million ask in September 2022 and, a very short time later, ultimately closed for just over $35 million. We don’t know if the buyer was a fan of the show, but Jeremy Strong has spoken highly of his fictional apartment, calling it “a really spectacular piece of real estate.”200-Amsterdam-Avenue-01200 Amsterdam Avenue, #PH2 (Brown Harris Stevens)Roman and Kendall Roy are often pitted against each other in the boardroom and in competition in all other aspects of life. This includes real estate – in the same season where Kendall’s Upper East Side penthouse (see above) opened an episode, Roman was seen in a duplex penthouse of his own, this one at the top of an Upper West Side building that is the tallest in its neighborhood. If some activists had their way, though, the penthouse wouldn’t exist – at one point, the developer was ordered to remove 20 floors of the building.

Features include, but are not limited to, advanced home automation and security system, a home gym and basement swimming pool, a climate-controlled wine cellar, a glass-enclosed garage, and a planted roof deck. The townhouse was only built a few years ago, but has already attracted the rich and famous offscreen as well as on – Lady Gaga once lived there for a brief time.

270-Broadway-01Tower 270, #19D (Douglas Elliman)While the residential lounge at 180 East 88th Street (see above) was used as a stand-in for Shiv Roy’s office, her home is a trophy penthouse in a downtown government building turned Tribeca loft condominium. The real-life penthouse is not currently on the market, but the New York Post notes that a five-bedroom apartment below is. Either way, Shiv’s TV building stands in stark contrast to her portrayer’s real-life tastes – at the beginning of the year, Crain’s New York Business announced that Sarah Snook had bought a two-bedroom apartment in a boutique Williamsburg building for under $2 million.

2-Park-Place-01Woolworth Tower Residences (Sotheby's International Realty)Kendall Roy has ownedsome of the most impressive real estate on Succession, but his ex-wife’s apartment is not to be overlooked: Over the first two episodes of the third season, Kendall holed up in Rava’s apartment, a pavilion penthouse at the top of the Woolworth Tower Residences. In real life, it sold for $19.5 million to a buyer identified only through a trust.67-Franklin-Street-01Cast Iron House, #4A (Douglas Elliman)"Cousin Greg" started out as something of a joke on Succession; but as the seasons played out, it was clear that he was not to be underestimated. His savvy applies to real estate as well – one scene showed him in a four-bedroom home at a Tribeca loft condominium transformed by Pritzker Prize laureate Shigeru Ban. Off-screen, it sold for $5.625 million. While downright modest compared to the rest of the Roy family, Greg’s home is still more opulent than that of the actor who portrays him – Nicholas Braun bought a Lower East Side loft for under $2 million in January 2020.118-Riverside-Drive-01118 Riverside Drive, #15B (Compass)Eye-catching real estate is a hallmark of Succession, and that applies behind the scenes as well as onscreen: In mid-May 2023, the New York Post announced that producer Frank Rich and his wife, author Alex Witchel, listed their Upper West Side apartment, which is nearly a mile away from Roman’s fictional penthouse (see above). While not as lavishly appointed as its fictional counterparts, it nevertheless enjoys excellent proportions and spectacular views of the Hudson River.
