On Friday, WWE will formally announce that WrestleMania 35 will return to East Rutherford New Jersey at MetLife Stadium, according to Brent Johnson and Michael Sol Warren of NJ.com.
New Jersey was rumored to be the venue for a while now, as Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports reported back in January (citing a source), that MetLife Stadium would be hosting WrestleMania next year. He also mentioned that Detroit and Philadelphia were also considered for the event.
MetLife Stadium was also the host of WrestleMania 29 in 2013, which drew 80,676 spectators and made a reported $72 million in revenue. New Jersey also hosted WrestleMania IV and V, both at the Atlantic City Convention Hall. Attendance was reported at over $18,000 both years.
Opened in April 0f 2010, MetLife Stadium is home to the NFL's New York Jets and New York Giants, costing $1.6 billion in construction. It holds 82,500 spectators, and played host to Super Bowl XLVIII - where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8. On top of the NFL, MetLife Stadium is also used for college football and Major League Soccer games, and is a popular venue for major concerts.
Last time WrestleMania came to New Jersey, the WWE Universe got to see John Cena defeat The Rock in an epic match to win the WWE Championship. On top of that, Triple H defeated Brock Lesnar to keep his wrestling job safe. Other notable matches saw The Undertaker defeat CM Punk (his last 'Streak' victory before Lesnar snapped it the following year), and Fandango upsetting Chris Jericho.
Given that it's very close to the major New York market and owns a terrific venue, New Jersey was a no-brainer of a choice for the WWE. For now, we await the official announcement and any further details.
