Every film in the Jurassic Park series is a box office hit. However, Jurassic Park III holds a few unfortunate records for the dinosaur franchise.

While the Jurassic Park franchise is one of the most successful film series of all time, Jurassic Park III holds some disappointing box office records. As of 2022, the Jurassic franchise consists of two trilogies, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, and with the release of Jurassic World: Dominion, it has become the 11th highest-grossing film franchise of all time earning a total of $6,004,618,796. The films have ranged from being the best cinema has to offer to mindless action set-pieces, and Jurassic Park III was the franchise's first film to receive a mixed response.

Jurassic Park III is the third film in the Jurassic franchise and the final act of the Jurassic Park trilogy. Said to be the worst film of the franchise, the Jurassic Park III movie made many fumbles from breaking up fan-favorite couple Alan Grant and Ellie Satler, to the film’s smaller less epic story, to killing off the T-Rex and making the Spinosaurus the main dinosaur of the film. Regardless of good or bad reviews from critics and audiences, every Jurassic Park/World film is a box-office hit, and Jurassic Park III is no exception. However, the film also holds some unwanted franchise records.

Jurassic Park III Is The Lowest-Grossing Jurassic Movie

While Jurassic Park III could still be considered a box office hit, it is still the lowest-grossing movie out of the entire franchise. Domestically, the film earned $181,171,875 at the box office, while internationally the third Jurassic Park film made $187,608,934. In total, the film made $368,780,809 worldwide, which is impressive considering it was made on a $93 million dollar budget. However, in comparison to the other films in the Jurassic franchise, these numbers aren’t quite as impressive.

Another unfortunate record the Jurassic Park III movieholds is that it never surpassed $500,000,000 at the box office. The Lost World made almost double the box office of Jurassic Park III, earning a worldwide box office total of $618,638,999. Meanwhile, every other installment is a part of the billion-dollar club. Despite bad reviews, Jurassic World Dominion’s box office amounted to $1,001,625,488 and constant re-releases of the original Jurassic Park brought its box office gross to $1,033,928,303. Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom earned a worldwide total of $1,310,466,296, and the first Jurassic World is the 7th highest-grossing film of all time having earned $1,671,537,444 at the box office.

Jurassic Park III Is The Only Jurassic Movie Not In Its Release Year's Top 3

The release of a Jurassic Park movie is rare and almost seen as a special event, which explains its huge box office draw. Due to this, every Jurassic film has landed in the top 3 highest-grossing films of their year of release, except for Jurassic Park III. Jurassic World and The Lost World earned the second highest-grossing film spots, while Fallen Kingdom and Dominion earned the third highest-grossing film spots. When released in 1993, Jurassic Park became not just the highest-grossing film of the year, but of all time until Titanic in 1997. However, Jurassic Park III fell short, becoming the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2001.

No one could deny that the Jurassic franchise has made its mark in cinematic history. While other franchises could easily be compared to one another, there is no other film series that exclusively focuses on dinosaurs, and it’s clear from the giant box-office numbers that the Jurassic franchise gets people to go to the theater. Even with the lower box office of Jurassic Park III and its lackluster performance compared to the other films, it still prevailed to be a relative hit, proving that audiences will always be hungry for more content about the great creatures from 65 million years ago.
