Alexis and David go through a transformative journey as their family reconnects in Schitt's Creek, but how old were they at the beginning and end?
David and Alexis Rose experience their late 20s to early 30s in Schitt’s Creek, but exactly how old were they at the beginning and end? The series has a fairly messy timeline, as Schitt's Creek is set over six seasons from 2015-2020, but only about three years pass within the show from the premiere to the finale. Dan and Eugene Levy have both stated Schitt’s Creek’s events occur over a 3.5-year timeline. This makes it a little easier to surmise the characters’ ages at the end considering the years in the show don’t correspond with its real-world length.
David is continually referenced to be older than Alexis, but their exact ages in any given season are less clear due to Schitt’s Creek’s fuzzy timeline. Considering Alexis’ birthday is never revealed, it’s unclear what the exact age difference is between David and Alexis, but their varying ages in different seasons seem to suggest he’s about 4 to 5 years older. Moira celebrates her birthday once while Johnny's is never revealed in Schitt's Creek's run. Their actual ages are never once confirmed, but David and Alexis are a different story.
David notably celebrates his birthday in Schitt’s Creek’s season 3 finale, which is the same night Alexis has her high school graduation. If season 3’s finale is the halfway mark of the series, which runs about 3 years, it can be surmised that David was turning 33 years old at this point. In the Schitt’s Creek season 2 premiere, “Finding David,” his missing person poster lists his age at 31 years old, suggesting this is how old he was at the very beginning of Schitt’s Creek. David later reveals his birthdate to be July 2, 1983 in the season 2 episode “Moira’s Nudes." Since the show premiered in January 2015, it can be concluded he was 31 at the beginning of the series. Since the timeline gets fairly messy after the premiere, his birthdate isn’t too helpful by the end. Schitt’s Creek’s finale takes place in September, three and a half years after the premiere, meaning David would be 35 at the end of the series.
Alexis’ birthday, on the other hand, is never celebrated in Schitt’s Creek, but her age is referenced occasionally throughout the series. In Schitt’s Creek season 1 episode 4, Alexis tells the Rose family about bribing a drug lord with sex 10 years ago, to which Johnny, aghast, questions why she was in Thailand at age 17. This suggests that in 2015, at the very beginning of Schitt’s Creek, Alexis was 27 years old. In Schitt’s Creek’s season 3 episode “Stop Saying Lice,” Johnny mentions to a few hotel guests that his daughter is 28 years old, which aligns with only a year and a half or so passing in the first three seasons. If three and a half years have gone by since Schitt’s Creek’s premiere, and Alexis is about 4-5 years younger than David, she’s around 31 years old at the end but could still be finishing up her 30th year.
David and Alexis’ ages are part of what makes the Roses' journey in the Schitt’s Creek's town so charming. The idea of two parents in their 60s and two children in their late 20s and early 30s finally learning how to be a family is part of the optimistic approach to life that Schitt’s Creek preaches. Alexis and David are fully-grown adults and are still sharing a bedroom with two twin beds while bickering like children. While most of their lives were spent independent from their family and any real responsibility, they spent these few key years in their lives truly maturing and appreciating those around them. With David and Alexis both in their 30s by the end of Schitt’s Creek and just finally discovering who they are and what they want to do, the series proves that it’s never too late to find oneself and become who one is meant to be.
