The Night Court reboot has a sad storyline about the original series' protagonist, Harry Stone, and the true story makes the plot even sadder.
Warning: Contains spoilers for the Night Court reboot, episode 1The Night Court reboot reveals the fate of the original series' Harry Stone, and it is made sadder by the true connection to the character's actor, Harry Anderson. The original Night Court was Anderson's first major work as an actor, running for nine seasons as part of NBC's legendary Thursday Night Must See TV line-up. While an episode of 30 Rock tried to give Harry Stone the happy ending he didn't get in the original Night Court finale, the reboot goes in a sadder but still satisfying direction.
Many believe that the classic Night Court was created as a vehicle for Harry Anderson, given that the central character of Judge Harry Stone was, like Anderson, an avid fan of jazz legend Mel Torme and a talented magician. This was purely coincidental, however, according to Night Court creator Reinhold Weege, who claimed that he had based the series around a magic-loving prankster named Harry before Anderson was considered for the role. The connection between Anderson and the classic courtroom comedy is so strong that it would be impossible for the new Night Court reboot not to address the final fate of Harry Stone's character in some fashion.
How Night Court Reboot Reveals Harry Stone's Passing
The Night Court reboot centers around rookie judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch), Harry Stone's daughter, who has just been assigned to her father's former bench. Harry Stone's death is confirmed about halfway through the pilot, after Abby looks up her father's old colleague and friend, Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), who is still living in New York City. Dan is quick to express his sorrow at Harry's Stone's passing when Abby introduces herself.
The specific details of Harry Stone's death and his history after the Night Court finale are not given. Dan says that he and Harry lost touch over the years, but that he never stopped respecting him. Abby confirms that Harry felt the same way and that he had told her stories about Dan and their time working together. It was these stories that inspired Abby to look Dan up when her court needs a new public defender, hoping that he might help her inject some of her father's brand of idealism into her cynical and complacent staff.
Will Night Court Reboot Honor The Rest Of The Original Cast?
Aside from Harry Stone, none of the members of the original Night Court cast are referenced in the reboot's pilot, despite the final fates of the original cast being one of the biggest questions surrounding the Night Court reboot. Abby muses that "anyone who worked with my dad moved on," which leaves room for future episodes to bring those characters in. Hopefully, the Night Court reboot will make mention of court clerk Mac Robinson (Charles Robinson) and Public Defender Christine Sullivan (Markie Post), since both Post and Robinson passed in 2021 and their characters deserve the same closure that the Night Court reboot gave Harry Stone and Harry Anderson.
