Friends: 10 Things Fans Still Hate About Chandler

Chandler was an instant favorite on Friends with his wit and humor, but there were some things about him that put fans off, too.
Friends fans love Chandler for his sarcastic attitude, witty comebacks, and ability to lighten any moment with his sense of humor. He was a relatable character with real human insecurities and struggles.
Although he was definitely one of the most lovable characters, none of the gang were perfect, and Chandler did do some heinous things over the years. Perhaps some of these were explained by his childhood trauma and insecurities, but they still left plenty of fans thinking that they would want to be Friends with Chandler in real life!
10 He Was Over-Critical Of His Friends
Chandler was a great character because of his witty comebacks and inability to hold back his sarcastic comments. However, some of his comments to his friends could come across as borderline offensive and not at all supportive.
Chandler showed that he was a decent friend by constantly showing up for them and helping them out when needed, such as giving Joey money or helping Ross move. Even though he was a good friend, he was guilty of mercilessly teasing and commenting on their problems or mistakes instead of being a supportive listener. Although it was usually done in innocent fun, it sometimes was insensitive and over-critical.
9 He Mixed Up Joey's Sisters
The moment where Chandler can't figure out which of Joey's sisters he kissed was played for laughs, but it wasn't that funny. Instead of admitting he had made a mistake, he continued to make things worse, lie to his friend, and kissed another of Joey's sisters!
Joey had good reason to be upset with him under the circumstances, as Chandler showed a lack of respect for him and his sisters - and even though fans may be more forgiving due to Chandler's misery and drunkenness, his reactions after finding out what he did were just off-putting.
8 His On-And-Off Relationship With Janice
Janice was easily labeled the annoying ex-girlfriend that they couldn't seem to get rid of, but it wasn't even her fault half of the time. Chandler was guilty of playing with her emotions and constantly bringing her back to break up with her again, which became quite the running gag on Friends.
Janice was actually pretty supportive and compassionate toward most of the friends several times in the show. Because of Chandler's on-and-off-again relationship, she wasn't portrayed as a great person, but Chandler is really not the innocent one here and was actually half of the reason they kept getting back together. He played with her emotions, treated her badly, led her on, and even dated her just to avoid feeling lonely.
7 His Fat-Shaming Of Monica
Chandler and Monica were an iconic couple in the show, but looking back at their flashbacks, the way he treated Monica because of her weight was just wrong. This is one major flaw about Chandler, even though it somehow didn't seem to affect their relationship.
The flashbacks of Monica were supposed to be comedic and show how much she changed as a character, but the way Chandler treated her because of her weight was so wrong. He acted disgusted by her and put out by her attempts to talk to him simply because of her weight. He didn't seem to have any problem being in a relationship with her later on when she was slim, proving he was okay with body-shaming and not at all accepting.
6 His Lack Of Respect For His Mother
Fans are well aware of Chandler's dysfunctional relationship with his parents. Looking back on his mother's treatment, he showed no respect for her and was actually pretty rude about voicing his opinions.
Chandler's mother was a charismatic and successful character with a unique lifestyle. He constantly made sly remarks about her to his friends or even in front of her and rudely shamed her for being sex positive. Even though it made Chandler feel uncomfortable and embarrassed, the way he handled it in the show was disrespectful, considering she was his mother after all.
5 His Homophobic And Transphobic Attitude
Another look at the dysfunctional family dynamic of the Bings was Chandler's relationship with his dad. The constant disapproval and transphobic comments that constantly came from Chandler was played as a result of his parents' separation and his own childhood, but they were completely unacceptable.
Chandler shamed both his parents - and was particularly homophobic and transphobic once his estranged parent was introduced. The show as a whole failed the character, of course, at times referring to them as a gay man working at a drag show in Vegas, but later portraying the characters as a transwoman who showed up at her son's wedding in a beautiful dress - only to be deadnamed and insulted. The handling of the entire story arc was deeply problematic - and seeing how transphobic Chandler was didn't endear him to fans.
4 His Relationship With Kathy
Even though Chandler and Kathy were depicted as a cute and playful relationship, the way it began and its sneakiness didn't do Chandler any favors. Chandler almost ruined his and Joey's friendship by getting with Kathy and yet still ends up being with her. It was by far one of the worst things he did to Joey.
Chandler somehow didn't see the wrong in his time with Kathy behind Joey's back. He knew Joey and her were dating but spent late nights watching tv with her, flirting, fantasizing about her, and even buying her gifts. When Joey finally found out, Chandler apologized for his wrong-doings but then still chased after Kathy and continued to have a relationship with her after she and Joey broke up. He seemed to prove he cared more about a relationship than his friendship with Joey.
3 He Ran Out Of His Wedding
What could be more heartbreaking and hurtful than a bride or groom running out on their wedding? This proved Chandler was a character full of insecurities and inner demons, but it was an awful thing to do to Monica on deeper thought.
Chandler was known for avoiding his emotions throughout the show, but he refused to acknowledge his doubt and fears about marriage until the wedding day was not okay. He could have spoken to someone about what he was feeling, but instead, he waited until the wedding day and then tried to ditch. It was an awful thing to do to Monica and honestly could have been even worse if the other friends didn't step in to help.
2 He Chose His Job Over Monica
Even though Chandler and Monica supposedly made a choice together, there was no way Monica was going to tell him what to do career-wise. Chandler ultimately decided to put his job over Monica and move away from her to Tulsa, one Friends storyline fans would cut if they could.
It was a tough decision for Chandler to choose between quitting his job to stay with Monica or risking their relationship by moving to Tulsa for work. He not only tried to avoid making the decision himself by asking Monica to make it for him, but he did decide to put his job over her in the end. This decision proved to strain their relationship by limiting their time together and leading Chandler to pick up some bad habits again.
1 He Kept Secrets & Elaborately Lied About Them
There was more than one time in the show that Chandler kept secrets from his friends and relationships and then was tasked with creating an elaborate lie to try and cover his tracks. Looking back, these actions from Chandler proved lying was one of his worst quirks, and come across as very toxic and potentially hurtful for those around him.
Chandler constantly fell back into old habits, attempting to keep them a secret from his friends by lying about them. He kept his true feelings toward Janice a secret and deliberately lied about, even flying all the way to Yemen, instead of being honest with her. He also picked up his bad habit of smoking when he moved to Tulsa and attempted to hide it from Monica, which led to a fight and made Monica question whether or not she could trust him.
