Fear Street led viewers to believe C. Berman was a different character, but there were clues to her real identity from the beginning.

Fear Street C Berman Hints

Fear Street Part Two: 1978 ended with a twist on who C. Berman actually is, but there were clues leading up to this from the beginning of the movie. After a couple of tough years with a lot of not-so-popular or successful movies, the horror genre has been enjoying a great run recently, not only in film but TV as well. The realm of streaming has been an important player in this, as it has given a lot of creative freedom to filmmakers and is more open to different types of stories. A good example of this is the Fear Street trilogy, released on Netflix and marketed as a three-week event.

Fear Street is based on R.L. Stine’s book series of the same name and tells the story of the curse of Shadyside through the years, with all the killings being connected by Sarah Fier, a woman executed for witchcraft in 1666. Each movie covers a different sub-genre of horror, with Fear Street Part One: 1994 being a slasher movie, Fear Street Part Two: 1978 focused on summer camp horror, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 having a more dramatic approach. Fear Street Part One ended with the reveal of C. Berman (Gillian Jacobs) being the only known person to have seen the witch and lived to tell the story, but the movie misled the audience by making them think C. Berman was Fear Street Part 2’s Cindy Berman (Emily Rudd).

Fear Street Part 2 took viewers to 1978, where Camp Nightwing became witness to a series of murders commanded by Sarah Fier. The movie focuses on the Berman sisters, Cindy and Ziggy (Sadie Sink), who tried to stop Cindy’s boyfriend, Tommy (McCabe Slye), when he was possessed by the witch and started killing all the campers that crossed his way. At the end of Fear Street Part Two, it was revealed that Cindy wasn’t the one who survived but Ziggy, who saw the witch when she bled on her hand and was killed by one of Fier’s henchmen, but was brought back by Nick Goode thanks to CPR. Ziggy, then, is C. Berman, as her real name is Christine, and there were a couple of clues to this twist from the beginning, the biggest one being her dog’s name.

At the beginning of Fear Street Part Two, viewers get a glimpse at how Ziggy’s experience with the witch has affected her, as she has become paranoid and has a bunch of clocks all over the house with alarms for different tasks, such as feeding her dog. Her pet’s name is Major Tom, a persona of legendary artist David Bowie and who is mentioned in the songs “Space Oddity”, “Ashes to Ashes”, “Hallo Spaceboy”, and “Blackstar” – and Christine’s nickname, Ziggy, comes from another character created by Bowie, the famous Ziggy Stardust. In addition to that, the personality of C. Berman as seen in Fear Street Part One fits that of Ziggy a lot better, as she’s a loner who looks after herself and can be aggressive at times, though this could have been justified by the 1978 experience changing Cindy’s personality.

Fear Street Part Two surely won’t be the last time viewers get to see Ziggy Berman, as there are still a couple of questions about her and her experience waiting to be answered, mostly how she has survived for so long after her connection with the witch. Hopefully, Fear Street Part Three: 1666 will answer all the questions left by the first two movies, and fans should pay attention to all details as nothing seems to be a coincidence in the Fear Street universe.
