Far Cry 6 teases the return of Vaas, the iconic villain of Far Cry 3, despite the character's apparent death at the player character's hands.
Vaas Montenegro is one of gaming's most iconic villains, and Far Cry 6 hints that the sadistic smuggler could be making a triumphant return in the near future. The open-world first-person shooter series is known for its intense villains, with Vaas paving the way for other figures like self-appointed king Pagan Min and cult leader Joseph Seed. The sixth entry in the Far Cry franchise takes players to Yara, a brutal Caribbean dictatorship, where players face off against ruthless dictator Antón Castillo. While Giancarlo Esposito as Far Cry 6's Anton Castillo is a worthy successor to Far Cry villains of the past, the sixth game also hints at the return of an old fan favorite.

Far Cry 3 antagonist Vaas Montenegro, portrayed by Better Call Saul star Michael Mando, torments players both physically and emotionally throughout the game. The plot kicks off when Vaas captures protagonist Jason Brody and his friends, intent on selling them into slavery, when they accidentally skydive onto an island inhabited by his pirate crew. During the events of Far Cry 3 the player repeatedly runs into Vaas and slowly learns his backstory, making him a provocative and profound rival. The feud is finally settled in a brutal boss fight against the pirate lord, which ends with Vaas getting stabbed by the mystical Dragon Knife.
The perspective of Vaas - recently explored in Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, is exemplified by his infamous speech about "the definition of insanity." Far Cry 3 draws parallels between Vaas and Jason, making the villain a dark reflection of the protagonist and an often sympathetic foe. Michael Mando's masterful performance turned Vaas into a pop culture icon, which motivated the sociopathic smuggler's return in the form of Far Cry 6 downloadable content. The DLC, titled Vaas: Insanity, lets players control the infamously unhinged warrior in a roguelike first-person shooter experience that explores his psyche and points to the character's dramatic return.
Far Cry 6 Teases Vaas' Survival & Possible Return In Far Cry 7
By exploring Yara, completing the game and finishing the Vaas: Insanity DLC, Far Cry 6 players can find many hints pointing to Vaas Montenegro's return. Multiple Vaas Easter eggs in Far Cry 6, like his iconic sitting pose or a body buried in sand, serve as nods to the iconic villain. However, completing Far Cry 6 triggers a post-credits scene where Juan gives Viviro, a cancer-treatment drug developed in Yara, to a smuggler implied to be Vaas himself. The Vaas: Insanity expansion also has a secret ending where an aging Vaas sits on a beach talking to a tennis ball, revealing that he somehow survived his apparent death in Far Cry 3. These two scenes are a strong indication that Vaas will return in a future game, either serving as a prequel to Far Cry 3 or following his survival of the game's events.
With Vaas surviving the events of Far Cry 3 and tying into Far Cry 6's ending, Ubisoft may be setting up Far Cry 7 with the return of Michael Mando's bloodthirsty pirate. The character is still considered the greatest antagonist in the series, due in large part to Mando's portrayal of the violent villain, and his return would mark the first time that a villain starred in two separate installments. However, only time will tell whether these Far Cry 6 teases and Easter eggs are more than mere references to the series' infamous antagonist.
