Professional Background
I am currently an associate professor in the departments of Family Medicine and Community Health as well as in Population Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center. I am a practicing physician and University faculty educator as well as an appointed public health official at the county level. Since our first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Kansas in early March, I have been fully engaged in supporting the Wyandotte County Health Department in their preparedness, case and contact tracing, adoption of innovative strategies to enhance symptom monitoring, and increasing access to COVID testing. I am focused on our most vulnerable community members and ensuring we reach them with appropriate information and provide additional support to meet their range of social needs which have been exacerbated by the economic downturn. Through this intense engagement with the Wyandotte County Health Department, I have earned the title of Deputy Health officer for Wyandotte County, KS.
Prior to COVID-19, my great interest was in strengthening health services to meet the needs of rural and underserved communities. While at the University of New Mexico, I helped develop and implement the Health Extension Rural Offices (HEROs) program, which continues to serve rural families throughout the state. While at Johns Hopkins and University of New Mexico I was able to serve Native American families, both in terms of developing clinical guidelines and policies for standardized hepatitis C screening and treatment, as well as delivering direct care on the Zuni and Navajo reservations. I have a strong foundation in health policy, public health and prevention supplemented by practicum experiences in both rural and urban areas and public health organizations. Aside from practicing Family Medicine, much of my professional time is also spent furthering my commitment to prevention and public health through collaborative projects such as health extension in Kansas, working to create a community-linked interdisciplinary care team for our patients and health professions students and residents, as well as working with our medical-legal partnerships on behalf of the families we serve. I also served as a member of the Council on Graduate Medical Education, the committee that advises Congress on matters related to health professional workforce trends and future needs.
