The recent promo battle between Cody Rhodes and Paul Heyman had the wrestling world talking. WrestleMania 39’s main event build of Cody vs Roman Reigns saw things starting off personal with the Rhodes and Heyman segment. Cody talked about his father Dusty Rhodes working for ECW playing a huge role in his family’s lives.

Heyman was the one to book Dusty and give the legendary veteran one more shot in the spotlight. Rhodes had an underrated ECW stint that added another chapter to his strong legacy. Fans clearly enjoyed it since it created a scenario no one could have predicted. Cody’s promo warrants a deeper look at the ECW run of Dusty that Heyman booked.

How Dusty Rhodes Ended Up In ECW

Many fans remember Dusty Rhodes having a long stint with WCW throughout the 1990s in various roles. Dusty did wrestle and even worked with his son Dustin Rhodes in the earlier half of the decade. However, a retirement from full-time action saw Rhodes moving into a new position at commentary. WCW often placed Dusty on commentary for Thunder, Saturday Night, and PPVs for a short time.

Rhodes seemed happy to have a character role again in the New World Order when he turned heel to manage Scott Hall. Unfortunately, that was the end of relevance from the heel turn as Dusty barely got to impact any storylines. WCW used Rhodes as a rotation player for both on-screen and backstage roles before he left the company.

Dusty had a desire to continue performing and needed the money for his family. Cody Rhodes has revealed that his father made some bad investments and lost most of the savings from his glory years in the ring. Dusty took jobs promoting local businesses, but he wanted to have one more run and make some money along the way. No one could have predicted that ECW would be the place where he’d find a new lease on wrestling.

Paul Heyman Books Dusty Rhodes In A Perfect Role

The history between Dusty Rhodes and Paul Heyman goes all the way back to the early 1980s. Heyman was a passionate fan that took photographs at various shows and wanted to have a bigger role in the business. Rhodes helped Heyman with some early jobs and the two always got along. Heyman learned from many legendary minds in the business, but Dusty truly saw something special to give him a chance.

The favor was returned almost two decades later when Heyman booked Rhodes for ECW. Both sides benefited when each were in unique situations in the year 2000. Dusty wanted to keep working, and Heyman was trying to keep ECW alive after most of his top stars left for WCW and WWE. The name value of Rhodes helped ECW get another major star to promote.

Dusty Rhodes vs Steve Corino

Steve Corino was one of the younger Heyman projects when he badly needed new top stars. The Monday Night Wars destroying the ECW roster required Heyman to continue making new stars each year. Corino was a pet project to become a hated heel. The arrogant promos and lack of respect for the generation before him made Dusty the perfect rival for him when joining the company.

Dusty Rhodes Shows That He Can Still Be Extreme In ECW

Cody Rhodes referenced both finances and pride as things that Paul Heyman provided for Dusty with his run there. Dusty feuding with Steve Corino became a top angle for ECW due to the compelling promos. Corino holding his own with arguably the best talker in wrestling history gave him credibility before they even locked up. Rhodes not wrestling for many years in WCW did make fans wonder if he could still perform in the ring to pay off the story.

ECW fans were treated to the big return of Dusty to a relevant company in his matches against Corino. Many veterans of Rhodes’ era hated ECW for the bloody hardcore matches, but Dusty wanted to prove he could do it too. Heyman even booked a wild Texas Bullrope match that saw Rhodes bleeding but winning a spectacle of a match.

Dusty proved that his age didn’t matter when it came to work ethic and emotion. ECW fans loved Rhodes as their own with his big win over Corino. Heyman convinced Dusty to wrestle a second Texas Bullrope match, defeating Corino’s sidekick Jack Victory before heading back to WCW. The short run for Rhodes in ECW gave Heyman a chance to book a childhood hero that delivered great success. Cody’s words today tell the story of how important the Dusty run in ECW for all involved.
