Pixar has a history of including surprises after their movies' credits, but does Elemental have a post-credits scene that is worth waiting for?
Pixar is back in the original story genre again, but does Elemental have a post-credits scene? The 2023 animated movie from director Peter Sohn tells the story of Ember and Wade, two elements from Element City who fall in love despite their differences. It is a return to Pixar making original movies after attempting to expand the Toy Story franchise with Lightyear. Although Elemental is not part of a franchise right now, there is always the chance that the movie could evolve into one if it proves to be successful. Pixar has not announced plans for Elemental 2 yet, but a sequel could be set up in the 2023 release.
Hollywood has become much more comfortable teasing potential sequel plans or simply leaving audiences with an extra surprise through the use of post-credits scenes in recent years. Pixar is no stranger to this tactic, as the studio has repeatedly included blooper reels and bonus scenes once the credits stop rolling on their movies. This includes Lightyear having three end-credits scenes to try and launch more movies. With there being a clear precedent for Pixar to resort to these after-credits scenes, it is understandable to wonder if Elemental has a post-credits scene.
Elemental Does Have A Post-Credits Surprise
Elemental does not have a post-credits scene in the traditional sense, but Pixar does give audiences who stick around a different type of surprise. Those who sit through the credits will hear an original song from Lauv called "Steal the Show" as they see the names of everyone from Elemental cast members to the legions of animators who worked on the movie. It makes sense to sit through the credits just to hear the song and show some respect to the hard-working crew members. But, Pixar also includes an Elemental post-credits surprise instead of a usual blooper real, funny scene, or sequel setup.
The Elemental post-credits include a special dedication from director Peter Sohn. The filmmaker who previously worked with Pixar on The Good Dinosaur includes a touching dedication to his parents after the credits finish rolling. Elemental's story is layered with similarities to immigrants, which gave Sohn a personal connection to it. His parents are Korean immigrants who traveled to New York in the 1960s, making his family experience the basis for Ember's family. That is why Sohn included the Elemental post-credits dedication to his parents.
Elemental's Dedication Is Better Than A Real Post-Credits Scene
It would have been easy for Pixar to not give Elemental an end credits scene in any capacity or take a more traditional approach. However, Peter Sohn's touching dedication to his parents is a much better outcome than the other scenarios. Getting another joke, a blooper reel, or a more direct sequel tease might have each been fun on their own, but they would not include the same level of connection to Elemental's themes as the dedication. Pixar allowing Sohn to include the special moment for his family helps make this post-credits moment a welcomed surprise that helps wrap up the movie.
