At the end of October 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced that squash would be one of five sports making its debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. This is a victory for advocates who have been lobbying to make this popular racquet sport take its place alongside tennis and badminton at this elite level.

Squash dates back to the 19th century and began as a variation on tennis, much like pickleball. But unlike pickleball, squash is played on a four-walled court; as such, it is less conducive to pick-up games in makeshift settings. Activists set up an outdoor court in Hamilton Fish Park in spring 2018, but vandalism and poor maintenance led to it being demolished a few years later.

However, a growing number of residential buildings have begun offering squash courts as an amenity. Below, we look at the New York City buildings where future squash Olympic medalists could very well be training.
