As Squash becomes Olympic Sport, Explore 25 NYC Buildings with Squash Courts

Squash dates back to the 19th century and began as a variation on tennis, much like pickleball. But unlike pickleball, squash is played on a four-walled court; as such, it is less conducive to pick-up games in makeshift settings. Activists set up an outdoor court in Hamilton Fish Park in spring 2018, but vandalism and poor maintenance led to it being demolished a few years later.
“True squash enthusiasts know that New York City does not offer enough courts” – Ari Goldstein, Senior Vice President, Extell Development
There are a number of dedicated squash clubs throughout New York where people can get instruction and book a court, not to mention squash courts at gyms and private clubs. However, a growing number of residential buildings have begun offering squash courts as an amenity. Below, we look at the New York City buildings where future squash Olympic medalists could very well be training.
At a time when there is much buzz about converting offices to residential use, Downtown by Starck offers an appealing example with the transformation of the former J.P. Morgan headquarters to an amenity-rich luxury condominium. The athletic offerings alone include a full-scale gym, yoga room, half basketball court, bowling alley, and squash court.

Element is an amenity-rich tower in the Lincoln Center section of the Upper West Side. The wellness offerings alone include a state-of-the-art gym, lap pool, children's pool, sauna and steam room, basketball court, and squash court.

Studio Gang's first New York residential building stands out as much for its extensive amenity package as it does for its scalloped facade and bay windows. The Park Club's health and wellness section is home to a fitness center, yoga and group fitness studio, locker rooms with steam showers and saunas, a saltwater pool, and a squash court.

Residents of The Aldyn enjoy spectacular river and skyline views, high-end appliances and finishes, and over 50,000 square feet of wellness and social amenities. These include a La Palestra athletic club with fitness center, yoga/Pilates studio, rock climbing wall, bowling alley, basketball court, and squash court.

One Manhattan Square is the tallest and most amenity-rich residential tower on the Lower East Side. A 100,000-square-foot amenity suite of indoor and outdoor offerings includes a multi-story fitness center, two bowling lanes, a golf simulator, a basketball court, and a squash court.

The Waterline Square development has brought three striking towers to the Far West Side skyline and a new standard of living to local residents. In addition to residents-only amenities at all three buildings, residents have access to the over 100,000-square-foot Waterline Club with offerings catering to all interests, lifestyles, and hobbies, including squash.

53W53's design by Pritzker Prize laureate Jean Nouvel makes a striking statement above the Museum of Modern Art, and the interiors are crafted to a similarly lofty standard. Top-of-the-line amenities include a lap pool, fitness center, and squash court.

While squash requires a particular environment for successful play, its particular court can easily be adapted for other activities. Such is the case at 96+Broadway, the amenity-rich new condominium transforming its Upper West Side corner - the regulation squash court includes a basketball hoop, allowing other sports to be played in the space.

The Cortland enjoys a prime West Chelsea address in close proximity to the Chelsea Piers complex, Equinox High Line, and the sports courts and skate park of Hudson River Park. However, the building offers an incredible array of athletic offerings without having to go outside. These include a gym, lap pool, golf simulator, and accredited squash court.

150 East 78th Street features a timeless design by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, but the interiors and amenities are well up to today's trends. Brooklyn Point has been dethroned as the borough's tallest building, but its amenities retain their superlatives. The rooftop infinity pool is the highest in the Western Hemisphere; several stories down, the squash court designed by InteractiveSQUASH is the first interactive court to go into a residential building. The court can offer advanced coaching in real-time, and an app can log the players' progress.

A hallmark of 378 West End Avenue is advanced air filtration, and all amenities are reached via doors with copper alloy handles. These include a gym, sports simulator, half basketball court, and squash court.
