Melissa McCall, everyone's metaphorical mom on Teen Wolf, may have ended up with Chris Argent, but could Noah Stilinski have been the one for her?
With Teen Wolf airing on MTV, the focus of the series laid firmly on the teenagers dealing with the supernatural creatures every week. Even so, fans still loved to see the parents of those teenagers become embroiled in the world of werewolves and banshees. Chief among those parents was Melissa McCall.
Mother to Scott and a nurse at Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital, Melissa was in the dark at the beginning of the series, but by the end, she and Sheriff Noah Stilinski were well versed in the supernatural. She was also in a relationship with former supernatural hunter Chris Argent. There was a contingent of fans, however, who always thought she’d end up with the sheriff instead. Which one of them was really the better match for Melissa?
10 Noah: They Knew Each Other For Years
While fans don’t know exactly when the McCalls wound up in Beacon Hills, it is clear that they’ve lived in town since Scott was very young. The same is true of the Stilinskis. Scott and Stiles have been friends, as referenced in the series, since at least the third grade. That means Melissa and Noah have known one another for about a decade when the events of the series began.
That would mean there wouldn’t have been any awkward getting-to-know-you phase for the two of them. They also already saw one another at the lowest points in their previous relationships - when Melissa kicked out her husband and when Noah lost his wife to a degenerative disease that affected her brain.
9 Chris: He Brought A New Perspective To Beacon Hills
Knowing someone well is an important part of a relationship, but the argument can be made that if two people have already known one another for a decade, if they were going to get together, it would have happened already. Chris Argent is someone new, with a new perspective on Melissa’s life and the town she lives in.
Melissa wouldn’t be experiencing the same old thing with him that she would with another Beacon Hills resident. The Argents have lived everywhere and still have contacts all over the world. A relationship with Chris could give Melissa new insights into the world around her and new opportunities.
8 Noah: They Bonded Over Their Sons
One of the biggest ”clues” for fans that Noah and Melissa could end up together at the start of the series was that they were already each other’s kids’ surrogate parents. Scott looked up to Noah in the same way that Stiles looked up to Melissa.
The two were there for one another - and their kids - in times of supernatural stress. Melissa and Scott even went to the hospital with Noah and Stiles when Stiles decided to find out if he had the same illness that took his mother. It seemed like Noah and Melissa were on the way to uniting their family.
7 Chris: They Understood What It Was Like To Have An Overbearing Spouse
When Noah Stilinski talked about his wife on the series, it was always favorable. The same could not be said for Chris and Melissa. Fans actually got to see them interact with their spouses during the run of the show - and not a version of them supplied by the Wild Hunt.
Melissa had to deal with an FBI agent who never seemed to realize that he was in the wrong. His drinking, and his treatment of Scott, is what had her throw him out of the house. Chris, on the other hand, married a woman who became a leader amongst the Argent hunters. As Chris become more aware of the problems within their ranks, his wife became more committed to the cause, even willing to kill teenagers, something he didn’t agree with at all. Chris and Melissa have had to work through their share of big relationship problems, and would be all the stronger for it.
6 Noah: Their Children Never Dated
Though the trope occurs often enough in sitcoms, it has to be awkward to date someone who is the parent of someone your kid already dated. For Melissa and Chris, that might have been one of the factors keeping them apart initially. Scott and Allison were one another’s first love, and a relationship like that still weighed heavily after she died in the middle of a battle.
That kind of emotional baggage wouldn’t be present if Melissa was dating Noah. Stiles and Scott were like family, not romantic interests.
5 Chris: He Was Willing To Teach Melissa His Hunting Tricks
Chris and Noah fill similar archetypal roles in the show. While Noah is a protector with a badge, Chris protects people from the shadows. That meant Noah couldn’t exactly hand over police issued equipment to Melissa so she could help out in a fight.
Chris Argent, on the other hand, was willing to teach Melissa how to use the various tools he took out on a hunt. He could arm her instead of save her from the bad guys.
4 Noah: They Were Both Still Learning About The Supernatural
There is a downside to Chris being one of the people teaching Melissa about the supernatural by the end of the series. There’s a slight power imbalance to their relationship there.
With Chris being the one most experienced in the world of the supernatural, it placed him in a natural leadership role amongst the adults and the teens. That made him less likely to accept advice or help from someone like Melissa, who had only just learned about the werewolves, banshees, and kitsune around her.
3 Chris: They Both Understood What It Meant To Fight Supernatural Battles
Much of Noah’s experience with familial grief had no relation to the supernatural. Melissa and Chris, however, understood the reality of living in a supernatural world all too well.
Chris lost both his wife and his daughter as a result of supernatural circumstances. Melissa’s son was technically killed, but she was able to revive him. They both spent a lot of time living in fear that someone they cared about wouldn’t come back from the fight before Noah even understood how powerful supernatural beings were.
2 Noah: Noah Understood How Important Protecting Beacon Hills Was
If Noah and Chris served similar functions within the story, Noah and Melissa served similar functions within Beacon Hills. The two of them weren’t solely interested in what they could bring to Scott’s pack, but instead in helping the community - and they had made careers of that long before learning about the supernatural.
Melissa McCall was always the last person out of Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital when it was evacuated. She helped everyone who needed it. Likewise, as the town’s sheriff, Noah always placed himself on the front lines before anyone else, making sure everyone was out of harm’s way. They were heroes of the people.
1 Chris: Chris Was Willing To Break The Rules
This was one huge difference between Chris Argent and Noah Stilinski - and it definitely appeared to be the point in the show that put a wedge between Melissa and Noah. Chris Argent didn’t have a problem with breaking laws or sweeping things under the rug to keep people safe. Noah Stilisinki did.
When it was clear that Kira Yukimura’s kitsune was out of her control, Melissa went to Noah for help. Instead of helping, he tried to arrest Kira for murder, prompting her father to take the blame for a dead body with her sword in it. It made Melissa not trust him, especially after all of the times she’d given him access to confidential medical files that could have cost her her job as a nurse. Chris never betrayed her trust, and always found a way to work around the rules or outright broke them to keep the supernatural teenagers safe.
